Heartbreaking Loss: Supporting Erin and Jaxon Mulligan
It is with a heavy heart that I write this—reaching out for help during one of the most devastating moments imaginable.
On February 4th, 2025, we lost Jim Mulligan—a loving father, a loyal friend, and a long standing part of the St. Louis community. After a courageous, exhausting year-long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis, Jim passed away just 15 days shy of his 50th birthday.
Jim’s fight against this cruel disease was nothing short of inspiring. It took everything he had, and despite his incredible strength, it slowly stole his breath until it ultimately took him far too soon. Sadly, this is not the first time Pulmonary Fibrosis has stolen a loved one from the Mulligan family; Jim's own father, James Martin Mulligan, lost his life to the same disease at just 57.
Jim leaves behind two extraordinary children—Erin, 29, and Jaxon, only 13. Their grief is unimaginable, compounded by the recent loss of Jim’s own mother—Mary Ann Mulligan—who passed away just 10 months ago. Mary Ann was more than a grandmother to Erin; she was a mother figure, stepping in to raise her in countless ways. The loss of both these strong, loving figures so close together has left Erin and Jaxon in a state of profound sorrow and uncertainty.
For the past year and a half, Erin has been doing everything she can to support her family, driving between Chicago and St. Louis, taking time off from work to care for her grandmother, and later, her father. The emotional and financial toll has been immense. And now, with Jim’s passing, that burden has grown heavier. The family is struggling, and without immediate support, the challenges they face will only increase.
This is where we can help.
The goal is clear: to provide Erin and Jaxon with the financial relief they need so they can focus on grieving, healing, and adjusting to life without Jim. Your support can help cover immediate costs, ease their burden, and provide them with the space they need to navigate this incredibly painful chapter.
How the Funds Will Be Used:
- Cover additional funeral and memorial service costs not covered by the Union ($7K)
- Purchase Jim’s headstone ($3K)
- Pay outstanding medical bills for Jim which amount is unknown currently.
- Assist with mortgages, utilities, and taxes for Jim and Mary Ann’s homes until a solution is found
- Manage insurance, taxes, and storage for multiple vehicles
- Help with storage unit costs for Jim and Mary Ann’s belongings
- Support Erin in covering daily living expenses (rent, groceries, utilities) as she’s been unable to work while caring for her family
- Provide emotional and educational support, including counseling and tutoring
- Address immediate and future needs for Erin and Jaxon’s care, which includes genetic testing for this genetic condition. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9740997/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36311538/
The Mulligan family has faced overwhelming heartache, and the road ahead will be filled with challenges. But with your kindness and generosity, we can help them take some of the burden off their shoulders as they try to rebuild their lives.
Please consider contributing to this fundraiser and sharing it with others who may be willing to help. Erin and Jaxon need us more than ever as they navigate this heartbreak.
