Meet my brother-in-law Erik. Erik is 49 and was born with cerebral palsy in Redwood City, CA. He is now living with my wife and I in Central Florida. Erik does not read or write, but he can hold a conversation. One thing is for sure though, when you promise him something, he will NEVER forget it!! He also does a fairly good job playing his PlayStation 5. His favorite food is pizza.
He is currently in need of urgent financial assistance. These are the most pressing challenges...
- Electric wheelchair. Erik was able to get his first electric wheelchair ever a few months ago, which was super exciting for him. He had to learn how to drive it, which took some practice, but he was an expert in no time. Unfortunately, the wheelchair broke only after a few months and has been in "the shop" for over 6 weeks. The parts are very expensive and are causing the delay. In the meantime, Erik cannot go outside until he gets his chair back because that was the only chair he has. We're looking into renting a wheelchair until we can afford to fix his electric chair.
- Medicare/Medicaid long term care application. In order for Erik to get into a nice facility where he has the complete care he needs, he needs to apply for long-term financial aid through Medicare/Medicaid. It's a lengthy application process, and it is recommended this be done through an attorney. The attorney is $6,500 and they need to be paid in advance. Erik's only income is $1,000 per month he receives from Social Security.
These are the two mission-critical items, but so much more is required for his care as well as expenses when he is able to get into assisted living. We understand everyone has their own problems and really appreciate any contribution. Our main goal is to make sure Erik is happy and well taken care of because he really deserves it.
