Join us in making a significant impact on our community by supporting Spanish Peaks Library's Building Expansion fundraiser!

Our goal is to remodel the top two floors of the library to create more space for community events, educational programs, and much-needed resources. With your help, we can turn this vision into a reality and enhance our library's role as a vibrant hub for learning and connection. Please donate and share our GoFundMe campaign to help us reach our goal! All funds from this site will be used to develop and work to complete the Building Expansion.

Spanish Peaks Library District is located on the first floor of the historic “Walsenburg High School,” building. The original building was constructed in 1920 and in 2009 the first floor of the the three story building was re-engineered to function as the Spanish Peaks Library District.

With 17% of the community living under the poverty level and 6% of the community living below 50% of the poverty level, the library provides access to needed resources and services many in the area may otherwise not enjoy. One example is that it provides shelter from the weather to the areas many homeless. It also offers the many lonely community members an escape from isolation. For many, SPLD is the only source of free access to the internet, computers, books, movies, and documentaries. Black and white copies are only 15 cents per page and faxing is only 50 cents a page, scanning is free. Other free services utilized heavily by the community include a free notary, legal assistance, and technical assistance. The library offers free technical training, 96 story time events per year, a robust children’s summer reading program, educational health fairs, senior services and education, safety education, gardening classes, meeting space and 12 large scale community events per year for children, adults and families. In addition we have the Gardner Bookmobile available at our satellite facility in Gardner.

In 2022-2023 under new directorship a greater emphasis has been given to marketing the library’s media, services, programs and events and targeting relevant portions of the community for each event. Efforts have been increased to reach and serve all ages of the community. With this, the library has more then doubled its programs and events both in number and attendance.
