In 2018, I got married to a man whom I thought I would spend the rest of my life with. But after years of physical and psychological abuse, I had no choice but to leave. In 2022, I filed for divorce as a self-litigant, feeling confident I could fill out the proper paperwork. However, since then, my husband has refused to sign and release me from this unhappy arrangement. I've moved on and am safe with my family, but I had to suffer the indignity of graduating with his last name on my paperwork, and worry that if something happens to me, he will profit from my hard work as a writer, a career he didn't support.
