Help Emma Thrive After Unimaginable Trauma

Donation protected
Emma is a child who has faced unimaginable challenges from the very start of her life. She is profoundly deaf, autistic, non-verbal, and intellectually disabled. Tragically, Emma has endured neglect, potentially unimaginable abuse and trafficking, and homelessness, leaving her vulnerable and struggling to navigate a world that has been anything but kind. Her parents struggled with drug addiction and used government benefits to support their habit. Emma was found confused and unbathed in a homeless encampment, a heartbreaking reflection of the neglect she suffered. Her journey took a turn on April 17, 2025, when her distant family member received a call from the Department of Children and Families (DCF) searching for Emma’s parents. It was discovered that Emma, at just 14 years old, was homeless and her parents were unable to care for her. After a difficult process, her aunt whom she had never met was granted guardianship and welcomed Emma into a safe and loving home.

When Emma first arrived, she was completely non-verbal and highly dysregulated, grappling with significant behavioral issues and severe dental problems. However, since transitioning to her new home, Emma has made steady progress. She is now learning sign language, and her behavioral issues have improved significantly. Every day, she proves that with a safe, loving environment and intervention, she can thrive.

Despite her progress, Emma’s new family faces overwhelming hurdles. As a single mother of her own children, Emma’s guardian struggles to find adequate after-school care, which threatens her ability to work full-time and support the family. Emma’s needs are often considered "too great" for some programs, yet "not enough" for others, leaving her family trapped in a system that fails to provide the necessary interventions. The funds raised will help Emma receive intensive therapies, and also cover costs of food, clothing, childcare, etc.

Reflecting on Emma’s journey, her guardian is heartbroken by the abuse and neglect Emma has endured, but remains determined to give her the love, safety, and support she so desperately needs.
