Hi, my name is Elizabeth, and I am a mother of two young daughters doing everything I can to keep my children safe. Last year, I fled my home with my girls due to domestic violence. We spent four months living in a shelter before I was able to find emergency housing. Unfortunately, the house I rented was not safe or suitable to live in—but at the time, I had no other option. The conditions of this house are dangerous: a tree is growing into the windows, the basement has been flooded for over four months, the back door does not close and must be held shut with a box of books, and the water shuts off repeatedly. My landlord repeatedly promises repairs and never shows up.
On December 1, I underwent life-saving surgery and was released from the hospital on December 6. I came home recovering from surgery with 61 staples in my stomach, only to discover black mold throughout the downstairs and bathroom. This is extremely unsafe—especially for someone healing from major surgery and for two young children. I am currently going through a very difficult divorce. My ex provides no child support or financial help, and we are constantly going back and forth to court.
I am asking for help to cover a security deposit, first month’s rent, and moving costs. This would allow me to get my daughters and myself into a safe, stable, and healthy home. If anyone knows of a landlord willing to rent a three-bedroom home with no security deposit and only the first month’s rent, I would be incredibly grateful. If you are able to donate, share, or offer resources, every bit helps more than you know. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for helping us move toward safety and stability. With gratitude, Elizabeth Pena
