Eli, a disabled, mixed-race trans person, and their dog Ianto, are being evicted by Hazel, Eli’s grandmother.

Eli has gotten back into the house to pack their possessions, but can’t stay there much longer. It is still very much winter in Michigan, so locating and paying for housing is urgent.

We are fundraising to cover the first couple of months of rent on a sublet room in the greater Detroit metro area, as well as storage for Eli’s possessions.

Eli’s friends all live in other cities or states, so couch surfing and shoving stuff in their basements isn’t an option.

We are currently combing Craigslist (etc) looking for dog-friendly and trans-friendly rooms to rent, so our fundraising goal may change as we get a better estimate of costs.

Background:

Eli has been living with Hazel for nearly a decade. Eli took on more and more eldercare and household maintenance tasks as the years progressed, Hazel’s health declined, and her dementia ramped up. In fact, Eli paid the property taxes on the house Hazel owns this year thanks to GFM generosity!

A few years ago, Hazel first became verbally and emotionally abusive, but a resolution was reached between Hazel and Eli, and it looked like things were holding, and Eli would have a place to stay until their SSDI application was processed and approved, and Eli could afford to move out.

Unfortunately Hazel’s reaction to Eli paying the property taxes (and keeping Hazel housed for another year) was to revert to old patterns of verbal and emotional abuse, culminating in kicking Eli out.

Eli and Ianto need a roof over their heads ASAP. It’s fuckin cold in Michigan right now.
