Help Durham Homeless Neighbors get Housed Faster

Many homeless individuals and families encounter significant financial barriers to being re-housed, including the requirement to provide security and utility deposits, first month's rent, and settling arrears and eviction payments. The lack of affordable housing only exacerbates these problems.

Though UMD has received federal Rapid Rehousing dollars in the past and found them to be an indispensable tool for housing clients, not all shelter residents qualify for this much-needed support.  Because these funds have helped many of our clients who do qualify move to permanent housing, we would like to provide more of our clients the same support. This is where YOU come in.

We would like to you to help provide Rapid Rehousing support for shelter clients in need, creating maximum impact this fiscal year.  This money will help us remove barriers, like the ones listed below, and get our homeless neighbors back into housing faster – reducing lengths of stay and freeing up beds for others in need of temporary shelter.

$35 pays for a housing application fee

$50 helps someone obtain move-in supplies

$100 funds a water service initiation fee*

$200 covers an electricity service deposit*

$500 finances a rental deposit*

$800 pays for first month’s rent

$2,000 clears an eviction record

 
*Many of these figures may seem high, but the reality is that people with bad credit, lower income, poor rental history, or a criminal record often have to pay more; an additional challenge that makes it even more difficult for homeless people to get rehoused.
