At the end of May 2024, our family was faced with a very unexpected and devastating event. Duane, our father and husband of our mom (Wendy), suffered an acquired brain injury that left him without the capacity to perform daily tasks independently like walking without assistance, cooking and eating independently without cues, self care without assistance and even the ability to use a tv remote or cell phone (which many of you know he could do VERY WELL :). In addition to his physical needs, he is also struggling with cognitive memory relapses like being able to count money, remember a list of items that were mentioned earlier, and attend to tasks for longer than1 minute. Those of you who know Duane are aware that these set backs are monumental to him and his family. As we continue to walk this journey with him, it has become apparent that our medical insurance will not be able to sustain the costs of his care for the duration that he will need. We have learned that it can take 6 months to a year to fully gain back what the brain is able to reconnect. We will not know until that time whether Duane will regain most of his cognitive and physical abilities or if he will be able to live independently again. We are trusting in God to guide us and we are leaning on our family and friends for support.

As he is finishing up his stay at a rehab facility, we are preparing for the next steps of care; a Memory Care Nursing Home facility. He will continue to get support for his physical and cognitive functioning as well as live in a safe environment where nurses, doctors and therapists are able to help him with his daily tasks. Unfortunately, this type of care is not covered under insurance and is self pay. The cost of the facilities is about $7,000 per month. While this type of stay will hopefully be limited to two months, it is something that we humbly ask for support for.
