A Scientist’s Family in Crisis — When Doing the Right Thing No Longer Works

For most of my life, I’ve done everything we were told to do — work hard, be honest, create value, and help others.

I became a scientist, an entrepreneur, and a teacher because I believed that doing good work for the world would lead to a good life.

I’ve spent over 20 years building real solutions:

Developing sustainable food and biotech innovations

Founding All Things Bugs LLC, the first insect-based ingredient company in the U.S.

Creating The Invertebrate Studies Institute (ISI), a nonprofit to preserve biodiversity and inspire future scientists

I’ve secured over $5 million in competitive research funding from organizations like DARPA, USDA, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, published dozens of papers, written a textbook, and even patented a breakthrough process for insect protein.

But here’s the truth:

In today’s world, being a scientist doesn’t pay the bills.

This year, ISI finally started to grow — partnerships forming, real momentum — and then the rug was pulled out from under us. Funding froze. Opportunities vanished. The economy shifted, and suddenly, even people who build value and hope for the future are left behind.

And now… my family is struggling to survive.

My wife and daughter are new to the USA, starting over and finding their footing in a new country. We also have a new baby, and this was supposed to be their first joyful American Christmas — a time of wonder, peace, and belonging.

Instead, every day is filled with uncertainty.

Bills are piling up. We’re fighting to hold onto the few assets we have left.

And the hardest part? Knowing that even after dedicating my entire life to science, innovation, and service — I can’t even give my kids a normal holiday.

We’re not asking for luxury — just for breathing room, stability, and a chance to rebuild.

Because good people doing good things shouldn’t have to suffer alone.
