DORIE AND HER 3 CHILDREN ARE FACING HOMELESSNESS! We put this in Dorie’s name so the money would go directly to her. Many of you remember the beautiful singer and songwriter, Theodora aka “Dorie”, who was always helping me backstage at every JFA Apollo fundraiser. She studied music with the late great Ann Ruckert, of the Jazz Foundation of America and helped look after Ann in her final days. Dorie is always doing for others. She is one of the greatest moms I have ever known. She has raised all 3 of her children alone and has known tough times, but always made it through—what has happened to them now is beyond “tough times.”
The building where she lives with her children apparently wasn’t up to code, and the sewage pipes backed up into their home coming in from the drain of the bathtub and the toilet also began flowing over into her apartment. It flooded and destroyed over 500 SQUARE FEET of their floors with toxic contaminated sewage water! NO ONE CAME TO FIX IT FOR OVER A MONTH and it was not remediated properly, leaving the toxic sewage and dangerous mold in their home!
THE KIDS and Dorie WENT TO THE HOSPITAL nearly every other day and her youngest daughter was hospitalized and DIAGNOSED WITH SEPSIS! When the Superintendent finally came to rip up the floors, he did not put the family in a hotel, they did the work WITH THEM IN THE HOME exposing them to more mold and toxic demolition dust. Dorie is now very sick and has been treated at the hospital frequently like her children, and she has developed new-onset asthma with abnormal lung imaging.
YOU ARE NEEDED NOW: We took up a collection from some of us close to her and moved all four of them and their pets into a one room hotel for the past 2 weeks but they can't afford to stay and they cannot go back to their toxic home. They have a puppy, a cat, and a bird with them.
DORIE IS TAKING EVERY POSSIBLE ACTION: She got inspectors to see the apartment. They cited it for seven health code violations, and HPD has ordered a licensed mold remediation company. But the landlord has still not contacted them to relocate them to a safe place! Dorie got legal aid to assist her in court this week and while she has documentation of everything, the legal process can take months.
This hotel is the only place they can be for now, according to the doctors, they cannot return to their home! IMMEDIATE SOLUTION: The only way to keep them safe, together and off the street for now is at this pet-friendly hotel, which is a miracle to find an affordable hotel in NYC.
In the weeks ahead they will need a safe place to shelter, they will need to bio wash all their clothes and belongings that have been infected or replace them, and there will be some medical expenses not covered.
Whatever YOU can do to help these beautiful Spirits, who have never complained once! They are all trying to get well and stay in the solution.
