Diego, his wife, and their two children—a nine-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl—have been through a lot since arriving in the United States. After escaping dangerous conditions in Colombia, they spent eight months in a public shelter, then moved to a pest-infested apartment in a rough part of town. The shelter helped pay some of the rent, but it was far from ideal. Their next move was to a rural shack offered by a friend of a friend, where the rent was low but the living conditions were harsh: no heat, no insulation, no fridge, and a long commute for Diego to his job and for their son to school. At least the yard gave the kids space to play soccer, but the shack is about to be demolished, and the family must leave as soon as possible.

Diego works hard washing science lab equipment in a clean room, earning decent pay and benefits. He and his wife are determined to stay in the area so their son can continue at his bilingual school, and they are saving up for the first month's rent on a new apartment. However, they don't have the deposit needed to secure a safe home in town. With no family nearby, a group of us are doing what we can to help them get settled.
