Dear Ones,
As we’re sure you know, this election is likely the most important one of our lifetime and its outcome will affect generations to come. For us, it's not about the political parties, it’s not us versus them; it's ultimately about voting for compassion and the protection of all human lives over power, greed, selfishness and narcissism. When our grandparents immigrated from India to the United States in the 1950s, the words they saw etched on the Statue of Liberty - "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" - confirmed their desire to build a home in this new land, promising to celebrate its diversity and welcome all human lives with open arms.
Obviously, Trump's presidency has not lived up to, or even considers, these values.
If you saw any of his Facebook posts, you know our dad avidly fought against the hate-filled rhetoric and actions coming from the head of our country, and wanted more than anything to get him out of office. He taught us that we cannot “stand by” and let him become elected for a second term. He would want us to do right by our country. So, on behalf of our beloved dad, we decided to jump in an Airstream and drive to Arizona to help register and protect as many voters as possible - both virtually, and on the ground.
Arizona is a battleground state with 11 electoral votes and 67 delegates for the DNC. In 2016, Trump won by just 3.5 percentage points over Clinton - the smallest margin for a GOP candidate since 1996 . Even though Trump won the state in 2016, in 2018 we saw greater voter turnout and big Democratic wins - meaning that Arizona may give Democrats their best shot at flipping a traditionally red state. But, as of October 20th, Biden is only up 2.8 percentage points in the polls (Real Clear Politics ), and the organizations on the ground in Arizona need our help to ensure that Biden maintains this lead.
Leading up to Election Day, we - along with our real-life wonder woman of a mom, Kiki Kapany, and our amazing friends Katie Ridgeway, Rachel Chung, Emma Shalaway and her dog Bronx (who also actively fought to defend human rights and get our country back, may he rest in peace!) - have been and will continue to be volunteering with a few organizations in Arizona working to elect Biden and Democrats statewide. As we head into the crucial final days before the Election, these organizations plan to increase their hours and hire more staff, but need the funds to do so. And that's where you come in! We are reaching out to our network of wonderful friends and family to gather donations, and redistribute them among the following Arizona-based organizations:
NORTHEAST ARIZONA NATIVE DEMOCRATS
The Northeast Arizona Native Democrats is an independent grassroots campaign on Navajo, Hopi and the White Mountain and San Carlos Apache Tribal Nations. For the 2020 Election, their goal is to increase voter registration by 4-5% and turn out an additional 20,000 voters across five northeast Arizona counties on tribal lands to elect Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Mark Kelly, Coral Evans, and many more Democratic candidates up and down the ballot. Native votes can decide Arizona and win the presidential election. The math has been done. In 2016, Donald Trump won AZ by less than 4%. Native votes can erase this gap. With funds, they plan to hire and train Native Field Organizers, increase radio ads to reach more voters, lead COVID-19 relief efforts (including distributing PPE to ensure safe in-person voting), and hire additional staff.
ALIENTO VOTES
ALIENTO Votes is a non-partisan campaign led by directly impacted youth leaders and allies who are committed to educating and engaging Undocumented and DACAmented youth in this election. They are focusing their efforts on mobilizing the 25,000 young and Latinx voters in Arizona, and asking them to cast their ballots on behalf of the dreamers and undocumented families who cannot vote. In addition to leading volunteers on Zoom calls to these populations, ALIENTO Votes is hoping to increase their own staff leading up to the election and hire paid phone bankers.
MISSION FOR ARIZONA
Mission for Arizona is a joint effort by Arizona Democrats to elect Biden, Mark Kelly and Democrats up and down the ballot in 2020. By unifying Arizonans across the state, Mission For Arizona serves as Democrats’ central hub for resources, organizing, and political infrastructure — creating a ground game that wins through unprecedented voter engagement, education, and mobilization.
