Help Dee and her kids: Rebuild after an apartment fire

Donation protected
On Friday, December 5th, my life changed in a way I never expected. What started as a normal night turned into one of the most heartbreaking moments I’ve ever faced. I had stepped out to pick up my son Darius from the bus stop, taking my daughter Zenovia with me cause i didn't want her to be alone in the house. While we were on our way back home, I got a sudden and terrifying call from my neighbor telling me that my apartment was on fire.

I rushed back as fast as I could. When I arrived, firefighters were already surrounding my home, and the flames had been put out. The sight of the damage was overwhelming. The fire started in the kitchen and spread enough to destroy the heart of my home, filling every room with smoke, soot, and toxic residue.

The most devastating moment came when my children asked about our three beloved cats. I had to face the unbearable pain of being told that Gio, Cooper, and Andy our sweet babies had passed away from smoke inhalation. My kids broke down in tears, and I felt completely shattered watching them grieve the pets who brought them so much comfort, joy, and unconditional love.

Firefighters later told me the fire was likely caused by an electrical issue. Even the rooms untouched by flames were covered in toxins and unsafe for anyone to stay in especially my children. My entire apartment is now considered unlivable.

What makes this even harder is that I’m a single mother doing my best to support my family, and I recently went through two surgeries, including one scheduled just days after the fire. I was supposed to recover at home, but now I don’t have a safe place to heal. Now staying with family temporarily. Between school, medical recovery, and financial struggles, I had fallen behind on renewing my home insurance. I never imagined something like this would happen, and I was devastated to learn I had no active coverage. That means everything repairs, cleaning, detoxifying the home, replacing essentials, and if necessary temporary housing must be paid out of pocket.

This tragedy has left me emotionally and financially overwhelmed. I’m trying to stay strong for my children, but rebuilding a home after a fire without any coverage is incredibly difficult and expensive.

Any help whether it’s a donation, sharing this page, or offering resources will make a tremendous difference. Please consider supporting me and my kids as we work to recover, rebuild, and find safety and stability again after losing so much in a single moment.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
