Hello everyone! My name is Deborah, and my car is the only thing that I own.
Back in June, after losing my job, I was kicked out of my step-parent’s house. It was pretty ugly, and probably a long time coming, but above all else it left me alone. By some miracle, I’d been fortunate enough to transition from sleeping in my car to a couple of my friend’s couches, and from their kindness and overall support I had planned to find an apartment and a stable job. I was able to secure a job in my hometown, which is a 30 minute commute from where I was staying, and have spent the past couple of months saving up, looking for apartments, and just trying my best to make the best of this situation.
But then my car needed repairs — six new tires and two alignments later and I was still trying to catch up. And now my car has been impounded, and my job will most likely not retain me for much longer since I have no way of reliably commuting to work.
The idea of someone seeing this is not as paralyzing as the thought of someone seeing this and wondering why they should help me when there are so many others who need it more. My car is all that all I have, and with impound fees, the cost of getting my car back securely will keep going up and up until it’s not mine anymore.
It’s how I get to work, how I make money, how I manage to survive when I don’t have someplace to stay.
