Have you ever walked down a set of steps and not been able to tell where one ends and the next begins? For me, that happens every day.

Hi, I'm Debbie Malone. I'm legally blind and completely colorblind. For nearly twenty years I've worked to help people with disabilities live safely and independently. I've written books about it, trained groups about it, and I serve as president of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Florida. Now I need to advocate for myself.

What happened

After I fell on the steps in my community's common area, I asked management for high-contrast markings so I could see where the ground changes under my feet. The steps were painted yellow. On gray concrete, yellow doesn't give me enough contrast to see the edges.

I sent more requests, along with letters from my doctor and my orientation and mobility instructor. Both letters explain that I need black markings of at least 2 inches wide to see the steps safely. As of today, the steps still aren't marked in a way I can see.

Since then, I also received a seven-day notice from management. I disagree with it, and my lawyer is reviewing it.

What your gift will do

Thanks to a generous friend, my lawyer's $3,500 retainer is covered, and he can start on my case. The case will cost more than the retainer, so my full goal is $7,000. Your gift goes toward the rest of my legal fees for this case.

Why it matters

This is about more than paint. It's about walking out my own door without being afraid of falling. And when one person gets a reasonable change like this, it gets easier for the next person to ask.

How you can help

If you can give, thank you. Any amount helps. If you can't give right now, please share this page. Sharing matters just as much.

Thank you for reading my story and for standing with me.
