Dear family, friends and visitors,
As some of you may know, we (Charlotte & Puck) are volunteering as medical students at Daraja Mbili Hospital, a public hospital in a poor and underdeveloped area of Arusha, Tanzania.
The hospital mainly supports pre- and post-natal care, delivery, vaccinations, and wound care, as well as managing local medical emergencies. With its few departments and limited staff members, they still help hundreds of people every week. Diseases like pneumonia, urinary tract infections, wound infections, dehydration, HIV and malaria are common here and have a huge impact on health.
Unfortunately, the hospital is in poor condition. Because there are limited resources, treating patients can be difficult and sometimes even dangerous. Even basic care can not always be guaranteed, because the demand exceeds the medical supplies. This experience made us realize how lucky we are in the Netherlands with access to safe-, solid-, effective- and hygienic health care.
Our goal with this fundraiser is to raise money to provide the hospital with the required medical supplies and equipment.
We asked the staff of the hospital to organize a list of resources which are currently lacking. Besides giving the medical equipment and supplies, we would like to sand and paint the outside of the hospital because this is sorely needed. We hope to raise enough funds to purchase a majority of the list below:
Medical supplies
- Sterile surgical gloves - 6 boxes - 150 euro
- Kids plasters
- Isoflurane for anesthesia in the OK - 60 euro
- Medicines for the hospital
- Povidone iodine - 10 bottles - 22 euro
- Gauzes
Medical equipment
- Sterilization unit to properly disinfect all medical instruments - 500 euro
- Medical instrument trolley - 95 euro
- Medical scissors and instruments for the first aid room - 80 euro
- Surgical kit for the operation room - 400 euro
- Thermometer(s) - 30 euro
- Blood pressure cuff - 70 euro
- Crocs (hospital shoes) for operations - 5 pairs - 20 euro
Maintainance
- Renovating and painting the outside of the hospital - 850 euro
- Paint for marking sterile area in the OK - 5 euro
- Replacing the injection room sign - 20 euro
- Containers for (hazardous) waste (6x) - 7 euro
- Kids table and games for waiting room - 50 euro
Medical outreach
- medicines - 60 euro
- bloodpressure cuff
- bloodglucose meter
- medicines - 60 euro
- bloodpressure cuff
- bloodglucose meter
We have written down the estimated prices, but we don’t know all of them yet.
Beside working in the hospital, we also go on medical outreach to underprivileged villages in Arusha to help people who cannot afford medical health care or medication. We would like to buy medication (painkillers and antibiotics) and wound care products to help these villagers.
We will be working at the hospital for another month and in our last week we will purchase all the medical supplies and equipment together with the director of the hospital to make sure every euro is well spent. Next week we already want to start renovating the outside of the hospital. We will update all people who make a donation regarding all the activities we will undertake.
Please consider donating to improve the health of the residents of Arusha! Even with a small donation you can make a huge difference and improve the conditions and safety of these lovely hard working members of staff and their patients!
Thank you!! Asante Sana!!
