Evert Milla; Dedicated father, husband, brother, son, and uncle, lost his 12-year battle with ALS on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Although this horrible disease took away Evert’s mobility, strength, and ability to even speak, it never stole his spirit or his heart. He lived with his wife and children, at home protected by their love, until the very end.
Danielle was not only his devoted wife but also his full-time caregiver, all while working to support their family and raising their 2 children. Danielle truly embodied “for better or worse” as promised on their wedding day 16 years ago, as she cared for his daily needs even as his health deteriorated. Her love for Evert never wavered from their first meeting at a family BBQ in 2002 until the day he finally passed. No person could have taken on more responsibility or been more selfless than Danielle has been over the last 12 years. Yet she would do it all over again, knowing the pain, to spend just another day with her beloved husband.
Together, Evert and Danielle raised 2 children who have blossomed into amazing teenagers. Over the years they also shouldered more responsibility than children should have to bear, and endured more hardships in their youth than most should suffer. But now, their memories are filled only with the laughter and joy they shared within their four walls, as they loved nothing more than being home with their mom and Papi to savor that priceless time together.
Evert outlived every doctor’s prognosis by many years. And during those years the family strived, and often struggled, to make his life as normal as possible, all while praying a cure would be found. It was their devotion and hope that inspired him to carry on through all the hardships.
As we look to the future for their family, we ask for your help. The cost of caring for a disabled loved one is staggering, and Danielle has been the sole provider and caregiver for many years now. In lieu of flowers or other remembrances, we hope you will give to their cause. The past years have been difficult even in the best of times, with the weight of his illness on the family. But with your help, we can make the future years bright with expectation and hope, and help them through this most difficult of times.
