Nelson is a parent leader in our La Voz de la Comunidad- Framingham group. He has been active for two years. Since becoming involved, he has helped organize a forum on education and immigration in Framingham (2015), a campaign to bring back bilingual education in Spanish and Portuguese for newcomer students at his daughter's middle school (2015), and a vigil to call on Obama to stop deportations (2016). Now he is working on a Workshop for Families (April 2017) and on the Framingham International Workers Day celebration (May 2017).
Nelson is the single breadwinner for his family: himself, his wife, their baby Nelson, and their daughters: Daniela and Dariana. After not seeing his daughters for eight years, he reunited with Daniela and Dariana. Since coming to the US, they are safe, happy and healthy and flourising in school. His lovely daughters Daniela and Dariana are applying for political asylum and their legal fees are $4,000! It will be a long and arduous process for the family, and for Nelson, it means taking time off of work and accompanying his daughters to Boston for asylum interviews, immigration court hearings and meetings with their lawyer. As a community, we helped Nelson find a great lawyer who offered reduced fees. We also offered to set up this fundraiser for Nelson and his family because we know a lot of people want to help but don't know how. We want to call on each other to help out this family. Remember: A little helps a lot!
