Help Dan Build Raised Planters for Seniors
Hello. My name is Daniel Guerrero. I am a 17-year-old Life Scout working on becoming an Eagle Scout. Ever since I was 8 years old, I have been involved in scouting. I have been an active member of Troop 73 in Westfield, NJ., sponsored by Holy Trinity Church since the fifth grade. One of my favorite parts of scouting is that it allowed me to interact more with the natural world. Whether it be through hikes or camping trips, I always love being in nature and surrounded by plants. Also, I have always really enjoyed my parents’ and grandparents’ vegetable and herb gardens over the years, and I often help them in the garden.
However, I noticed that not everyone has an opportunity to enjoy gardening and growing their own plants. There is a senior living area relatively close to my home known as the Village at Garwood. There, senior citizens live in a multi-story housing development. They have a lawn and a small outdoor eating area. However, there is no dedicated garden area, so I decided that I could do something to improve this outdoor space to make it more useful and enjoyable for the residents of the senior home. As my Eagle project, I decided to build raised garden beds for them. With raised garden beds, the residents who often have difficulty bending down and working on the ground, will be able to work on their garden comfortably. Those in wheelchairs will also be able to enjoy gardening.
In order to build the two raised garden beds for the senior center, I will need to purchase lumber, other building supplies, gardening tools and some plants. This will cost an estimated $1,500. I hope that you will consider helping me reach my goal with a donation in any amount. Thank you!
Yours in scouting,
Daniel Guerrero
