Help Dan and Tasha with Adoption Costs

Dan and I decided to try and start our family about six years ago. When we struggled to have any success after about 2 years, we decided to work with a fertility doctor. We had 2 years of unsuccessful treatments and needed to take a break due to the financial strain. Everything we had been doing was out of pocket as our insurance didn’t cover fertility treatments. While we were recouping our funds, we started to look into adoption. Dan had a co-worker who had adopted, we had a family member who had adopted, and a family friend who was adopted herself. We talked with all of them and felt that this was the path we were called to travel.

We started researching different adoption agencies to find the best fit for us. We connected with a local organization, Hillcrest Family Services, who helped us with our home study and we decided on Angel Adoptions as the agency that aligned with our values. We were accepted by Angel Adoptions in March of 2023. We waited nearly a year and a half until we received our first connection.

The agency said the average time for a connection was 13 and a half months. We have had 2 connections and disruptions before our current birth mother connection. Our first connection thought she was further along than she was and ended up losing the baby a week after we connected. Our second connection was 2 months later with a family who already had the baby, but she had significant eye problems that they weren’t sure they could handle. We talked with the family for a little over a month when they realized that it was too hard for them to go through with adoption and decided to parent their child. As happy as we were that they were able to keep their family together, we were devastated with another failed connection.

Through a special scenario with Angel Adoptions, we have connected with another agency, Selfless Love Adoptions. We aren’t able to share much about this birth mother other than she is very brave and strong. We read her bio and felt the strong pull to say yes to having our profile presented even though this would be a significant increase in birth mother expenses than we were expecting. One day later we received a call that the birth mother wanted to speak with us! After the call the Selfless Love Adoption coordinator let us know that the birth mother wanted to move forward with us if we wanted to move forward with her as well. We said yes immediately! Both agencies will be there for us to provide education and support and pray with us during this journey.

While we have been blessed to cover the costs of agency fees and the home study fees (~$50K), we now face significant expenses associated with the adoption, including birth mother fees and legal costs. These expenses, which can average around another $30,000, cover essential needs such as living expenses, counseling and groceries for the birth mother. We will also have any hospital fees after the birth associated with the baby and travel to the birth state. We will need to plan to stay in the birth state for up to 2 weeks to receive clearance to go home.

The adoption process is complex and involves significant costs. We have applied for grants and will continue to look for more assistance with the costs but need some additional support.

We have so much love to give and are deeply committed to nurturing and supporting a child. Our hearts are filled with joy as we spend time investing in the lives of our nephews and the children of our friends. We eagerly look forward to the day we can share this love with our own child.
