Hi! I'm Courtney!
I'm going through a difficult divorce after over 10 years of marriage, and I need some assistance with keeping my lawyer fees paid.
About me - I was diagnosed with ADHD and CPTSD, with autistic tendencies fairly late in life. I'm also a late-to-come-out queer of the asexual and agender variety. Despite being disabled, I do manage to hold a job, and that covers my living expenses. Unfortunately, I don't make enough to keep up with lawyer fees as the divorce process becomes more complex.
My story:
In March of 2022, I made an attempt on my life. With this breaking point, I began the process of figuring out why I had reached that point, and how I could ensure I didn't get there again. I realized I'd been living in severe burnout for at least 6 years due to being the main financial provider of our family while preparing to open a business together, and then during the first few years of the covid-19 pandemic when I took on an outside job to ensure the business could survive. When I began working with a therapist, other behavior patterns came to light such as people pleasing, and as I began working on putting myself first, tension rose in the relationship. By December 2022 he had moved out, and by March 2023 we had broken our lease and moved into our own apartments. I filed for divorce in September 2023, and that's where we are today, having just wrapped up the first stage of discovery.
Our only shared assets/liabilities are the business and the marital debt that is in my name. It should be a fairly straightforward divorce, however, even the first stage took longer than anticipated.
Where I'm at right now:
- Spent $3000 in lawyer fees trying to get information about our shared business, which he hasn’t provided.
- Currently have accrued over $8200 in fees with my divorce lawyer. I've managed to keep up with it until now, but the fees are adding up very quickly now, and will continue to do so as we go beyond the discovery stage.
What I'm asking for:
- My current invoice for May with my lawyer is $1794, but I'd like to be able to raise as much as possible so I can continue using my lawyers comfortably.
- Anything raised over my initial goal, will continue to go toward those lawyer fees. If somehow by the end of the divorce there's anything left over from the GFM, it will be used to help me move back west to start the next chapter of my life, somewhere that I can make a home with my three cats.
