My name is Chris Stephens, Pastor of New Life Church, and Director of Heart 4 The Homeless, H4TH.
I am desperately searching for some help for a lady that was referred to me on Saturday afternoon, 8/8, who is about to be on the streets, but under no circumstance should she be. She has recently become homeless due to a relationship breakup and a various medical events, including a heat stroke.
She has never been homeless before.
She has never been on any drugs and she is disabled and uses a walker. It would be detrimental for her to end up on the streets. She would not last long at all, not only due to the nature of the streets but for health reasons. She has already had 1 heat stroke that has landed her in the hospital.
It is extremely dangerous for women out there, especially those not involved with the lifestyle of the streets. Her name is Claudine Wilson.
I am asking for help from the community because I have exhausted all of my resources. Keep in mind, I have helped men & women get off the streets and coming out of prison for 15 years, full-time. I know of all the resources out there. It usually only takes me 3 days on average to get someone off of the streets or max 2-3 weeks, but everybody is full right now. The shelters have all repeatedly rejected her and there is no city plan that will help her.
Here's the story, condensed, that led Claudine to being homeless in Tulsa with no help:
- 5 year relationship ends, causing the homelessness
- Couple tries to help her by letting her stay in a house w/ no AC, oven, refrigerator, or etc (in Okmulgee)
- She has kidney failure and a heat stroke from this and ends up in South Crest Hospital in Tulsa
- On Saturday 8/8 South Crest discharges her and sends her to the Day Center.
- They hired a driver to take her to get her belongings and then Day Center. **Note, nothing was set up beforehand with the Day Center....she was just dropped there.
- Day Center rejects her!
- This is where I get involved because the hired driver knows me and calls me, tells me of the situation and that I should get involved. This lady should not be on the streets.
- I talk to Claudine and then call the Day Center myself and talk to the director on duty, James. They still reject her! Because she can not get up off a mat on the floor! She is disabled. She can get up off a chair, walker, bed or anything else with ease, just not the floor.
- Salvation Army rejects her!
- I call the Salvation Army director and tell him the situation....they still reject her!
- Desperate for a solution to keep her off the street for the night and with the 2 shelters rejecting her, I recommend she try going to OSU since she had already been in the hospital that day and maybe she still needs treatment.
- They look her over but will not admit. Temps are extremely high that day. I talk to the nurse on duty trying to explain the situation and ask her to call the Day Center & Salvation Army to see if she can get an exception since they are a medical facility.....even if they have a chair she can sleep on. She seemed to understand the seriousness of the situation
- She calls me back and says couldn't get Day Center or Salvation Army to....rejected again. They are sending her to the Crisis Center. I thought I could go to sleep and deal with it in the morning
- I woke up to texts......the Crisis Center sent her to Be Heard at 1am in the morning! They literally dropped her off behind the building on Admiral while they were closed and no one was there!
- She stayed the night at QT
- The next day I spend the whole day with her until we managed to get her covered at a hotel room for several days.
Usually all of my faith-based, sober living programs would take her but they have all been full. They and a couple others have paid for the hotels for the last 2 weeks but we are out.
- We have been back to the Day Center & Salvation Army 3 times in the last week each time to run into a problem where they are not willing or able to help. They have all been rude and very unhelpful. No need to detail each interaction. As I said, I have done this for 15 years and those organizations have never been helpful.
People like Claudine fall through the cracks of the system week in and week out. She needs help! If there is anything you can do, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!
