Need Support for Artist Charles Hinman & Janice Hinman

Dear Friends, Family and Supporters,

We are reaching out to ask for help for our parents Charles & Janice Hinman. Chuck, 91 and Jan, 95 are currently facing a financial crisis in their assisted living facility. As their children, we are doing everything we can to support them, but we've hit a roadblock that we can't navigate alone.

Chuck & Jan had a great life in New York City, where Chuck had his studio on the Bowery for 50 years. He is a well known artist and taught at the Art Students League. Sadly, Jan developed dementia and Chuck had a bad fall in late 2015 that left him in a wheelchair. Living in NYC was no longer feasible so in late 2017 they moved to an assisted living facility in NC.

Needless to say, these places are very expensive. We have had to hire outside help, also expensive. Coupled with the expense of storing Chuck’s art work in NY, their savings are nearly exhausted. We are trying to pool our resources to pay for their care, but our own funds are limited. We had hoped that some art sales would help, but the market isn’t there right now.

Although their life is not as big as it once was, Chuck & Jan have developed a routine, and they are comfortable in their home where they have built relationships with staff and other residents. We feel like a move would be devastating for them. The other options we have explored are a huge step down from where they are. IF they qualify for Medicaid it would be a nursing home. There is also the question of whether they would qualify for skilled nursing. It’s a big dilemma. We really hope they can live out the rest of their lives where they are.
