My name is Chanel, and I am a mother of five children, ages 16, 13, 6, 4, and 2. One of my children has a chronic GI condition, another has asthma, and I also care for a special needs child. For over a year, my family has been living in unsafe and unhealthy conditions. Right now, we have no heat, and my children are sick because of it. We are forced to boil water and take other measures just to try to stay warm, which makes it extremely difficult to manage daily life and care for my kids.
Our apartment has multiple unresolved issues: no proper heat, power that frequently cuts off and requires constant breaker resets, holes in the ceiling that leak water and cause damage, a front door that doesn’t properly lock, and ongoing maintenance problems with no reliable services. I have reported these problems to 311 and HPD, but many complaints were closed without resolution. Despite following the proper channels, nothing has changed, and my children continue to be at risk.
I am raising funds so that I can move my family as soon as possible into a safe, stable home where basic needs are met and a landlord follows state housing guidelines. Beyond my own family, I want to bring awareness to the housing issues affecting families across NYC so that others in unsafe conditions can also get help and support.
