My name is Carla Genusa, and I’m the mother of a beautiful 8-year-old girl with Autism. She is, and always has been, the light of my life. I have loved and cared for her since the day she was born, with my every waking breath. Before my daughter was diagnosed with Autism, my maternal intuition registered her difference. It’s that very instinct that has allowed me to provide her with the care and support that she needs, which has allowed her to flourish. A few years ago, her father and I separated, at which point he gave me the role of sole conservator. I am better equipped to care for her, and she is very attached to me. We do very well together and are very happy. I am currently enrolled in school and am a PreK teacher who does the best she can on her salary.
Why am I here? Her father is currently suing me to gain more rights in her life, AFTER he voluntarily gave me sole conservator. Let me be clear, my daughter is not a mascot. I will not use her as a means of gaining support or money. I only want to ensure that she is provided the best life possible at my side. I’ve dedicated my entire life to my daughter’s well-being. Before her presence, it was easy for me to feel without purpose. She is the light that guides me, and I’ll fight tooth and nail to guarantee she has the best support possible.
Currently, her father gets her 3 weekends a month. Most of her time is spent with me, where she feels most comfortable. Her father wants a geographical restriction for us, to take her for the entirety of the summer (she has never even spent more than a week away from me), and make drop-offs even more difficult for us. As it is, drop offs are in public areas due to a history of domestic violence. This upheaval in her life and the prolonged periods away from me would lead to her emotional distress. The thought of this alone terrifies me.
I must do everything in my power to gain the resources to get a lawyer and be able to pay for legal fees. I’ve never been one to lean on people, and this is difficult for me. Anyone that knows me knows that I would never ask for this kind of help unless I needed something for my daughter. Well, here I am. I’m asking for your help with legal fees so that I can keep my daughter safe and happy. I will update with valid evidence showing how the funds are appropriated, and I appreciate any assistance.
