The Children and Parents' Carnival Association (CAPCA) is an essential part of Notting Hill Carnival, and it’s something incredibly close to our hearts. Founded by my beloved nanny, Lee Woolford Chivers (MBE), CAPCA was created to give children the chance to be part of Carnival, showcasing their costumes and performances. Since the 1980s, CAPCA has been a space for young people to learn about the arts of carnival: costume design, dance, and cultural celebration. It has played a vital role in the Sunday "Children’s Day" procession at carnival.
Each year, CAPCA takes part in the iconic Children’s Day on Carnival Sunday, a day full of colour, music, and joy. This year, on Sunday 24th August 2025, our theme is “Modern Mayan Harvest”, honouring the beauty and wisdom of Mayan culture. The children will bring this to life through intricate costumes, movement, and performance—something they pour their hearts into.
Carnival has always meant more to us than just a parade. For my family, and for so many others, it’s a tradition that connects us to our Caribbean roots. It’s a celebration of identity, unity, and creativity. But more than that, Carnival is a powerful reminder of how communities can come together. Born out of resistance against racism and social injustice, it has grown into one of the biggest celebrations of West Indian Culture that exists today, with over 2 million attendees. Notting Hill Carnival is a space where we can embrace our differences, lift each other up, and find joy in our shared humanity.
This year, we’re facing a real challenge. Without urgent funding, CAPCA’s children may not be able to take part in the procession. The Nursery and Notting Hill Carnival have been a part of family traditions for so long, and I can’t imagine this year being any different. For many of the kids, this event is a chance to celebrate their culture, their creativity, and be part of something that connects them to their roots. Whilst for all of them, it’s a chance to be seen, to express pride in who they are and to be part of something bigger than themselves.
In a time when the world often feels divided, Carnival reminds us of what it means to come together. It’s about connection, celebration, and giving the next generation the opportunity to shine. This is about the power of community coming together to uplift the next generation.
We’re aiming to raise £5,000, with a starting goal of £2,400, to cover costume materials, resources, and the essential support needed to bring this year’s vision to life. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a meaningful difference. Your support helps keep the spirit of Carnival alive and ensures that the children of CAPCA can continue to be part of this proud legacy.
