For nearly 50 years, Calvin Steves has been a familiar face in Norman, Oklahoma, selling newspapers and brightening the days of countless residents. His dedication to the community is legendary—so much so that his image is immortalized in street art on Campus Corner, and he’s been voted ‘Celebrity of Norman’ in local readers’ choice awards, even surpassing well-known figures like Barry Switzer and Bob Stoops. A proud 1981 Norman High graduate, Calvin is rarely seen without his OU helmet, which he wears for protection due to his seizures. Despite his iconic status, Calvin’s life has been marked by hardship. His disability income barely covers basic needs, and he continues to work every day, selling papers across town to survive. Over the years, the Norman community has rallied around him, replacing his stolen newspaper wagon and lost class ring, but now Calvin faces his greatest challenge yet. His home has become virtually unlivable. The HVAC system has failed, the roof no longer keeps out the weather, and there are urgent structural, electrical, and plumbing issues. Calvin and his caretaker brother are unable to tackle these overwhelming repairs alone. The funds raised will go directly toward hiring licensed contractors to replace the HVAC and roof, clean and repaint the interior, and address critical plumbing, structural, and electrical problems. We also hope to provide new mattresses and reliable appliances, and pay off a small mortgage balance so Calvin and his brother can use their disability income for food and essentials. With the support of friends and neighbors, we can help Calvin live in a safe, comfortable home and give back to someone who has given so much to Norman.
