For some 22 years, Los Gatos UMC and (more recently) the Los Gatos Morning Rotary have built much-needed homes for poor, hard-working Mexican families in Punta Colonet. Selected families are carefully vetted by a local pastor as well as other trusted town business people.
This year we have a big enough, skilled team of 21 volunteers traveling to build two houses -- IF we can raise the money for materials. Anything helps. Material cost for a modest 12 x 20 frame home with water tower is approx $8,000. (We have a small nest egg from holiday fundraising.)
The two deserving families are Carmen Flores and Nestor Lopez, with their daughter, Lizbeth. They sold their home in Mexicali to buy a 'lot' in Colonet. Note that this lot is not traditionally plumbed -- water comes from a water tower and tank, which is replenished by water truck. The tower provides water pressure.
The other family has an even more sobering story: Daniela Acosta Vera and her young kids, Bryan and Jordan Acosta. Daniela’s husband recently died following an auto accident. Not long after, their youngest son Jordan fell from a moving car and is now recovering from head injuries. All of them live in a tiny, donated trailer.
Your help lets these hard-working families with no 'safety net' have a simple roof over their heads. All volunteers pay their way, use their own vacation times and 'rough it' until the job is done.
Thanks.
