Hurricane Helene struck Asheville a year ago, leaving a lasting impact on our community and closing several beloved dog parks. Since then, many pet owners have struggled to find safe, welcoming spaces for their pets, often resorting to walking them in restricted or even dangerous areas. Today, on the anniversary of Helene, I’m reflecting on the lives lost and the resilience of those who remain. As a songwriter who has found inspiration and healing on this land, I want to give back by creating a place where others can find peace and connection with their pets.
The Asheville Pet Park will be located high above the Swannanoa River, less than five minutes from the East Asheville Mall and the Walmart Supercenter, on top a beautiful three-tiered property once owned by Locke Craig, North Carolina’s 53rd governor. The park will feature a unique coppertop arched building, a dog wash area, and winding paths that lead through forested areas, apple, pear, and peach trees, and planned grape vines along the ridge. Friends and family have already helped bring this vision to life, but we need support to complete fencing, walking paths, and landscaping, especially in the lower and upper sections of the property. There’s also a plan for a separate path connecting to the main road, offering spectacular views and safe access for everyone.
Asheville Pet Park is for all pet lovers—families, seniors, people with disabilities, and anyone who wants to experience the beauty and tranquility of this special place. Your support will help us create a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment for pets and their owners, honoring the memory of those affected by Helene and building something lasting for our community.
