Help Build Wheelchair Accessible School Bathrooms in Rural Tanzania

Hello! We are a group of Stony Brook University students on a study abroad program in Tanzania. While in Mto Wa Mbu, we visited Manyara Secondary School. Last year, SBU and members of the Mto Wa Mbu community worked to install wheelchair accessible bathrooms in the school. Unfortunately, this project remains unfinished due to lack of funds. Our goal is to first raise $3000 to finish building these bathrooms and to purchase a 5,000-liter water tank that will provide the necessary water supply.

Mayanara Secondary School serves approximately 1,200 students, many of whom have mobility issues. Currently, the school only has twelve bathroom stalls that are in need of repair and cannot accommodate all the students. For students who use wheelchairs, using the restroom requires assistance from at least two other students and often results in long delays—causing them to miss valuable class time. Completing these bathrooms will make a meaningful difference in their daily lives. Every contribution brings us one step closer to providing equal access to something as basic and essential as a bathroom—something that we often take for granted.

The bathrooms will cost $3000 to complete. After reaching that goal, we aim to raise an additional $3000 to fund our second project—repairing the roof of one of the classroom buildings at Baraka Primary School in Mto Wa Mbu, Tanzania.
