Help Bring Obi Home

Nearly a year ago, Obinna “Obi” Uzoh’s life changed in an instant.

On the morning of October 23, 2025, after dropping his young son off at preschool, Obi was taken into ICE custody. He had no way of knowing that it would be the last time he would see his son for many months. Since that day, he has remained in immigration detention while his legal case continues through the courts.

Today, Obi has missed birthdays, holidays, school milestones, and countless everyday moments that no parent can ever get back.

Who Is Obi?

Obi came to the United States lawfully on a student visa to pursue higher education. He earned his master’s degree and built a professional career, always working to maintain lawful immigration status through the legal process. He currently holds valid employment authorization through 2029.

Over 13 Years ago, Obi pleaded guilty to an obstruction-related federal offense. He accepted responsibility, completed every requirement of his sentence and has had no further issues. Since then, he has worked to rebuild his life, supported his family, maintained lawful employment authorization, and pursued his immigration case through the legal system.

We are sharing this because we believe people deserve the complete story—not because one chapter should define an entire life.

Obi is more than an immigration case. He is a devoted father, a son, a brother, a friend, and someone who has spent years building a life centered on family, education, and hard work. Obi has been involved in his community through his engagement with his Catholic Church, soccer team, and volunteer work.

His family includes parents and siblings who are U.S. citizens, and his greatest joy has always been being a father to his young son.

Why Is He Still Detained?

Although Obi has remained in ICE custody for many months, his legal case is still ongoing.

His attorneys have filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus in federal court, asking the court to review the legality of his continued detention. That case remains pending.

At the same time, Obi has appealed the denial of his application for lawful permanent residence to the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA). That appeal is also pending.

These proceedings take time, and while they continue, Obi remains separated from the people who need him most.

A Father’s Greatest Heartbreak

The hardest part of this journey has been the separation from Obi’s young son.

In December 2024, Obi’s son’s mother passed away after battling cancer. Since then, Obi’s son has endured unimaginable loss at a very young age.

Instead of being able to comfort his son through that grief, Obi has remained in detention while his legal proceedings continue.

No child should have to lose both parents’ presence at the same time—one to illness and the other to prolonged detention.

Every week that passes is another week that father and son cannot make memories together.

Health Challenges During Detention

During his detention, Obi has experienced significant medical issues, including various infections from the detention facilities and obtaining medical attention became an additional source of stress during an already difficult time.

Months of uncertainty, separation from family, and continued detention have taken both an emotional and physical toll.

Why We Are Asking for Help

The financial impact on Obi’s family has become overwhelming.

To date, the family has spent over $56,000 on legal representation, and those costs continue to increase as both the federal court case and immigration appeals move forward.

Meanwhile, everyday responsibilities have not stopped.

The family continues to pay for:

• Ongoing legal representation

• Housing expenses

• Vehicle payments and transportation

• Childcare and preschool

• Medical expenses for Obi’s son

• Phone calls, messaging, and other communication costs required to stay connected with Obi while he is detained

• Basic living expenses while Obi is unable to work

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to help ease these financial burdens while Obi continues pursuing every legal avenue available to him.
