Help Bring Critical Medical Tools to San Quintín
Donation protected
We are raising funds for a volunteer medical training and service trip to the San Quintín Valley of Baja California, Mexico, scheduled for August 21–23, 2025. Our team is made up of doctors, nurses, technicians, and other medical professionals from various health organizations across San Diego. While they work for different healthcare systems in the U.S., each team member is participating voluntarily and independently of their employers. The trip is co-led by Dr. Zack Shinar, and Dr. Andrew Williamson, both of Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.
Our primary fundraising goal is to purchase two portable ultrasound probes and iPads. This will greatly improve the ability for healthcare providers in Mexico to diagnose and care for patients in a medically
underserved region.
A word from Dr. Andrew Williamson,(Sharp Memorial ER), our Ultrasound Director:
“In many areas of rural Mexico, a simple tool like a portable ultrasound can make the difference between life and death. We’ll not only be donating the equipment, but we’ll be also equipping local providers with hands-on training to use it for trauma care, obstetrics, and common infections. With this technology, they can diagnose life-
threatening conditions in seconds.”
Why this matters:
In San Quintín—a rural, agriculture-based community with over 150,000 indigenous farm workers—access to diagnostic tools like X-rays, CT scans, and ultrasounds is extremely limited. Many families live below the poverty line and cannot afford private imaging services. When equipment is available, it’s often broken or outdated. In some
cases, patients must travel over three hours to Ensenada just to receive a diagnosis. These delays can be life-threatening.
How your donation helps:
Every dollar raised will go directly toward purchasing:
-2 handheld ultrasound probes
-2 iPads for use with the probes
-Training for local providers on how to use the devices
These tools will be used to identify urgent conditions such as:
-Internal bleeding or fractures from trauma
-Complications in pregnancy
-Serious infections or abscesses
-Fluid around the heart or lungs
With this technology in hand, providers will be able to make life-saving diagnoses in real-time—right at the bedside.
Watch the Video: See the Impact of Butterfly Ultrasound Devices
This short video shows how portable Butterfly ultrasound devices are transforming healthcare in underserved communities around the world. It’s a powerful glimpse of the kind of impact we hope to bring to the San Quintín Valley in Mexico:
The region feeds us—let’s help care for them:
Much of the produce sold in U.S. stores comes from San Quintín, including berries labeled Driscoll’s. While this valley feeds our families, its people often lack access to the most basic medical resources.
If we raise more than needed for these devices, additional funds will go toward medications, surgical supplies, and running a community clinic day during our trip in August.
Will you help us bring hope and healing to San Quintín? Your support will have an immediate and lasting impact on families who need it most. Let’s change lives—together.
