My sister Krista was born on July 17th, 1989 premature at 24 weeks, 1 pound 11 ounces. She spent 92 days in the NICU, and overcame many obstacles just to come home. Krista is a beautiful and caring young woman, who has overcome anything in her way.
Krista and Carlos got married on September 24th, 2016. We celebrated a beautiful wedding, they were both so happy and went on right after their honeymoon in Hawaii. They were just like any young couple looking forward to starting their new life together. However, it turned out that while on their honeymoon Krista had been bitten by a mosquito and one month after their honeymoon she was diagnosed with "Dengue Fever". As a result, Krista has been left with limited mobility from her shoulders up, in very bad pain daily, needing daily assistance and as a result unable to work any longer.
As you can imagine this is a lot for a young married couple starting out, but Krista is a fighter, always optimistic, and strong-willed. Carlos and Krista grew stronger together during this time.
As time went on Krista and Carlos began thinking about their options of being able to have a family given Krista's health, thus they started on their journey to surrogacy with the help of both grandparents.
The cost was well worth it to both grandparents to provide both Krista and Carlos with the ability to start a family together. Something they both dreamed of their whole lives.
They started the process a year ago, found a surrogate and not long after found out they would be proud parents to twin girls due end or March/April!
Everyone was thrilled! It was then that Krista and Carlos decided they would move back home with me and my mom and dad so that we can assist Krista in taking care of the children. Truly a full house, but we wouldn’t have it any other way!
On January 14th, around 4 pm Krista and Carlos received a phone call from the surrogate that she was going into premature labor. Shortly after the baby girls were both born at 25 Weeks, about 2 pounds and 13 inches long. The worst part about this is that the surrogate lives in Utah, so my sister and brother-in-law were not able to be there for the birth.
My mom, Krista, and Carlos got on the first flight available to be with the babies.
The past two months have been a roller coaster of emotions for all. My mom and sister have been staying in Utah full time and Carlos has been going back and forth on weekends.
To make matters even harder, with the outbreak of COVID-19 the NICU understandably has many restrictions. Carlos cannot leave New York to visit his children, and the twins can only have one visitor a day. They are now talking to parents about planning to stay there as they may stop allowing parents to go out and come back.
We don't know when the girls will be released and when it will be safe for them to come back to New York. This is not how this was supposed to go, no one could have planned for this.
I know times are tough right now and there are a lot of people out there struggling. We ask that you take the time today to consider donating to our family.
All donations will go directly to help Krista and Carlos pay for the medical bills for the twins, hotel bills, car rental, and future transportation of everyone back to New York.
