My name is Jessica Adams, and I am a Lakota and transgender theater creator from Rapid City and enrolled in the Rosebud tribe. For years, I have carried a story in my heart, and today, I need your help to bring it to life.
That story is Haŋhépi Akenuŋpa Woéčhetu, a professional Lakota adaptation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night that we are staging in the summer of 2026.
This is more than just a play. It is an act of community healing, a work of historical reclamation, and a chance to create paid, professional opportunities for Native artists right here in the Black Hills.
Our story is set in a pivotal and painful moment in our history: the week between a traumatic event in late 1890, and the holiday of Twelfth Night, January 6, 1891. We follow the journey of two young Lakota twins, survivors of said event, as they navigate a world of grief and colonial oppression to find each other and reclaim their future.
While we honor this history, our play is inspired by the powerful words of David Treuer in The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: our story does not end with tragedy. It is a story of resilience, defiant joy, and the unbreakable spirit of our people.
We are building a powerful coalition of artists and partners, including:
A live, original score composed by a native American.
A stunning scenic mural designed by a respected Lakota ledger artist.
Culturally authentic costumes created by skilled Native artisans.
This is a true community-driven project, but we cannot do it without you.
By supporting Haŋhépi Akenunpa Woéčhetu, you're not just funding a play; you're investing in:
Cultural revitalization
Healing through art
Empowerment of Indigenous voices
Truth-telling for generations to come
Please continue to share our campaign with your networks. Every share amplifies our message.
Pilamiya for being a part of this profound journey.
