Brayden Belsey’s journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a story of heartbreak, resilience, and unwavering determination.
When Brayden was first trying to start jiu-jitsu, his Crohn’s disease was missed by the medical system, despite the pleads of concern to doctors by his parents, leading to a prolonged period of severe pain and dangerously low body weight. He desperately wanted to train, but his body couldn’t keep up. Watching others progress while he struggled was devastating, yet he never let go of his dream.
Today, Brayden receives IV medication every six weeks, allowing him to train and compete again. While he continues to manage challenges with appetite, weight, and energy, he shows up every day with gratitude and fire. That adversity has given him a deep hunger to succeed.
Since recovering, Brayden has flourished and earned the opportunity to compete internationally in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. All of this has led to Brayden earning a spot on Team Canada to compete at the JJIF World Championships in Abu Dhabi in August 2026
Brayden is a loving big brother, an incredible son, and has volunteered at his local gym. He gives everything to this sport and to the people around him.
As a family, we are doing everything we can to support him, but the costs of international competition: flights, accommodations, registration, and training abroad are significant.
If you’re able to support Brayden in any way, you’re helping a young athlete chase a dream that once felt impossible. Every donation and share means more than we can say.
Thank you for believing in Brayden
