Hello! My name is Yael Korc, I am a senior in high school, and I have been blind since birth. I was born in South America and lived there for half of my life before moving to the U.S., so I know firsthand how hard it is for blind and visually impaired children to receive braille technology and education there. This is why I want to raise money to buy at least three iPhones and refreshable braille displays for children in Uruguay. Each iPhone costs about $500, and each braille display costs about $1500. Once I acquire the technology, I hope to train at least 6 students and 3 teachers for the visually impaired that work with them how to use it. I chose Uruguay because it is a small country with half of its population living in its capital, Montevideo, so I would be able to reach more students. A refreshable braille display is a device that connects to a user's phone, computer, or tablet via Bluetooth and allows them to read everything that is shown on the screen of the connected device in braille. It also lets them interact with the device using its braille keyboard. Having access to this technology will allow them to not only read books and work in documents like a sighted person would but search the Internet and use an endless number of applications. It also serves them because it provides another way of getting information that can be more heplful to many of them rather than auditory information alone. Nací en Sudamérica y viví allí la mitad de mi vida antes de mudarme a los Estados Unidos, así que sé de primera mano lo difícil que es para los niños ciegos y con discapacidad visual recibir tecnología y educación braille allí. Es por eso que quiero recaudar dinero para comprar al menos tres iPhones y dispositivos braille actualizables para niños en Uruguay. Cada iPhone cuesta alrededor de US$500 y cada dispositivo braille cuesta alrededor de US$1500. Una vez que adquiera los equipos, voy a capacitar al menos a 6 estudiantes ciegos y 3 profesores para personas con discapacidad visual que trabajan con ellos sobre cómo usarlos.
