Help BIPOC facing gentrification in Charlotte NC
Hey everyone I’m starting this fundraiser to help with displacement cost for the families living in the colonial village neighborhood and Hollis house apartments located in south end Charlotte NC. This quiet little neighborhood is made up of low income black/ Hispanic families most of which have lived in these same homes for years.
After a year of grief, unemployment, and health struggles due to the pandemic, there was a notice given from the management office stating that everyone living in this community had to be out by September 30th 2021. The plan for this land is to tear all the homes down and make room for some new unknown project. This is devastating news for the residents of this neighborhood because not only is this notice coming after such a difficult year, but also at a time when rent and home prices are at an all time high .
If you are familiar with south end in Charlotte you know right now it is a hot spot for developers and real estate. In some areas the rent is valued at three times as much as what this community is paying now. Being a Black/ latino community means that, disproportionately, while looking for a new place to live, these families will face discrimination, racism, and other accessibility issues that put an incredible amount of strain on top of the already existing day to day struggles.
Last year in the hight of unemployment, homelessness, we witnessed the growth of tent city lining our streets. What is happening right now to this community is a direct attack on the low income community of Charlotte. Without any help this very well could lead to homelessness for some families.
The same people that build up south end are now getting pushed out, further and further away from friends, families, jobs, schools and their whole way of living.
I’m asking you to donate as much as you can so I’m the very least we can help these families with moving cost. Please note that all this money will go directly to them and will be divided up among at least 50 different families. Also note that this is a time sensitive goal so please consider sharing and talking about this far and wide.
