Betsy is a devoted mother who has always done everything she can for her son, Jimmy. Jimmy is a young man living with autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and epilepsy. He is unable to walk, and every outing is a major challenge for both of them. Betsy, now 56 and dealing with daily joint pain, has to lift Jimmy into his wheelchair, transfer him to the car, and then disassemble and load the wheelchair into the trunk. This process is not only exhausting but has become impossible for Betsy to manage alone.
Jimmy loves being outside and going on outings, which helps him cope with anxiety and behavioral challenges. He also has at least three medical appointments every month that are essential for his health and well-being. Without a suitable vehicle, Betsy can no longer transport Jimmy by herself, making it difficult for him to get the care and experiences he needs.
A new minivan, 2015 or newer, is required for the government to help install a wheelchair ramp. This would allow Betsy to safely and independently transport Jimmy, giving them both a better quality of life.
