Hello everyone, Happy New Year. I'm here to ask for help. My brother and his family lost their house and all their belongings in the recent Altadena fire. I got a call at 6am, 3am west coast time, my brother frantically telling me that they had to emergency evacuate. The fire spread overnight and was within 3 houses away from theirs. They woke the kids, had zero time to gather anything, and basically had to flee for their lives.
Imagine getting up at 3am and waking your kids, asking them to cooperate and not be scared, leaving every possession you have behind. Getting in a car and trying to escape, flying embers scattering your car, smoke everywhere, everyone choking. Trees falling, power lines falling.
Escaping to safety, but then the slow reality hits. They've lost everything. They no longer have a home. Where they've been for 12 years. A home where they've raised their kids. My niece just turned 14 and they are homeless. We're working on getting them into a long-term apartment, but since the fire, they've been in a tiny hotel, queen mattress and sofa bed.
This is my family and I wouldn't be asking unless it was absolutely necessary. But, they need help and any little bit you have to donate would mean so much to me and them. This money will go towards helping the kids and making sure they are recovering with the trauma of that night, finding happiness again and making sure they have everything they need as they grow up through this transition.
Thank you so very much, sending love and peace.
