Help Belizean cacao farm replace burnt crops
Donation protected
We're asking for your help on behalf of our friends Juan & Abelina Cho, who are the owners of a cacao farm in Belize. They are both of Mayan descent and started Ixcacao, the first-of-its-kind bean-to-bar Belizean chocolate business, in 2000. Located in the village of San Felipe, they grow and harvest organic cacao on the most beautiful farm (we had the chance to visit them back in May 2023, and it was one of the highlights of our trip!). Juan's family has been involved in cacao farming for five generations. They were recently victims of a neighbor's fire that destroyed a significant portion of their property, including crops and trees, to no fault of their own. The family relies heavily on this farm for both everyday food and the tourism it brings to their community. The report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise estimates the low value of their damage to be around BZD$ 12,000 (USD$ 6,000). Here's a copy of the email we've received from Juan:
A pleasant good evening my friends, from the beautiful jewel of Central America, Belize!.
I am.hereby reaching out to you all during this difficult time.
During this medium, as my self and my family suffers a fire that has gutted through our 20 acres cacao farm.
Some.of you that have came and visited our farm will learn the diversity of plants we have and our farming practice have never practiced slash and burn method.
It is unfortunate that the farmer adjacent practiced slash and burn and failed to alert us the neighboring farmers .. with the heat and strong winds blowing in my direction caused the fire o travel through a mountain and into our farm.
Destroying our 20 acre farm.
The farmer that started the fire claims he is just a subsistence farmer and that he doesn't have the economic resources to compensate for the damage. However he complied with helping me plant my farm back and clean to cover some of the damage caused by his fire.
I/we my family, rely heavily on our cacao farm and all the intwecropping plants we have to sustain ourselves.
Therefore, I'm hereby humbly reaching out to you all, if there's any such assistance in your heart to help us financially to buy back seeds and nursery bags to restart all over again
Attached are images of the destruction and and evaluation of the damage area by the ministry of Agriculture in Belize...
The estimated cost just for plants is BZD$12,161.35. not including the mahogany trees, ornamental plans, and all the timber trees as am yet to get that evaluation from ministry of natural resources and forestry department...
I'm also attaching our Belize bank information and wire instructions, If you feel like lending a hand to your favorite chocolate farm.
