My cousin, Daniel Pelayo Bacigalupo Caro, most known in social media as "Baci", is a young, hardworking father of two who has built his livelihood around his passion for the ocean and salt life. He creates films and videos that highlight the beauty of the sea and works in marketing for various companies and professional athletes of the sea.
Last night, while Daniel was away receiving the “Best Surfing Filmmaker of 2025” award, his home in Peru was being robbed. As he stood accepting a trophy that recognized his talent, dedication, and years of hard work, thieves were breaking into his house and stealing the very tools that made his success possible. The timing strongly suggests this was a targeted robbery.
The thieves stole over $20,000 worth of essential equipment, including multiple high-cost drones, MacBooks, PCs, professional cameras, and long, high-quality lenses—everything Daniel depends on to create, film, and work. In addition to that, they took $2,200 in cash, money he had carefully saved to pay his son’s school expenses. In Peru, schools begin in March, but families must pay a large lump sum in February for school and material for their children to be able to start. That money was saved for his child’s education, and it was taken in an instant.
Unfortunately, Peru is not like the U.S., where insurance coverage and security cameras are common, and the painful reality is that corruption within the police system makes a thorough investigation unlikely. Without his equipment, Daniel cannot work, and without work, he cannot support his family or begin to recover from this devastating loss.
