Help Baby Sawyer Zullo

For those of you who don’t know Krissy and Shawn have been going through hell the last week. Their youngest son Sawyer (only 6 months old) has been diagnosed with Bacterial Menengitis and has been hospitalized in isolation at the NICU at San Antonio University Hospital since April 1st.
Monday morning around 6 am Sawyer woke up extremely ill, vomiting, fever, and rash. Any young mother would assume he had the flu give the baby Tylenol and plan to just stay home ...not Krissy. Working in a hospital as a social worker herself Krissy wastes no time when it comes to medical care. It’s a family joke that Krissy overreacts when it comes to the boys, she has been known to take them to the emergency room for a bump on the head or even a bug bite (not joking...sorry Kris) However in this case, her concerned nature and fast action is likely what saved Sawyer’s life.
Shawn had been working all night and had just fallen asleep when Sawyer awoke noticeably uncomfortable, his soft spot appeared swollen and he was very sick. As 2nd time parents they knew this was not normal behavior and they acted fast. Luckily being in a small town the hospital is very close with in 30 mins Sawyer was rushed in and testing began, blood work, CT Scan, chest X-ray, everything came back clear and his flu test was negative. The doctors decided to do a spinal tap as a last precaution, Sawyer was so lethargic by this point he hardly flinched. Immediately upon drawing the fluid the local doctor knew it was menengitis and called for emergency airlift to San Antonio University hospital.
Krissy was able to ride ride with Sawyer in the airlife helicopter but with no family nearby Shawn had to take care of their 3 year old Dominick who was still at daycare. Shawn picked him up, packed up their truck with change of clothes, a few belongings and headed the 90 miles to meet them at hospital.
Since Monday Sawyer continues to show progress, his tiny body has been through so much. He is currently being intravenously treated for three different viruses that may have caused the bacteria to infect his body. At this point no exact strain has been determined and we have no answers on how he became infected. Menengitis is a very dangerous virus that attacks the brain and spinal cord, the saving grace at this point is we believe it was caught early and Sawyer is such a fighter!!
As a parent there is no amount of money that you wouldn’t give to save your child’s life but at the end of the day...there is a cost, that is what I hope to accomplish by this page.
Donations would help eleviate the stress of living 90 miles from the hospital where their son will remain until he is free of the virus. Hotel bills, hospital bills, airlift helicopter costs, being out of work while he recovers, any potential long term care following his recovery etc.
Krissy and Shawn are both such hard working young parents going through the worst experience of their lives right now and they need to be able to focus on the only thing that matters; Sawyer.
