Help as you are Weather the Occupation
Many of you have asked how you can help as you are (AYA), as folks aren't feeling safe to come out in the numbers we're used to. We are currently facing an unprecedented challenge. The recent federal occupation of DC has hit us hard - attendance has dropped by a wild margin, with the increase in armed federal forces making what had been a hard season much worse. As a result, we are struggling to keep our doors open, maintain the space, and meet the expenses.
We are aware that August is a typically slow month in DC, but with the current situation, we've seen a much steeper decline, and it's not yet leveling off. We're concerned because we're unsure how long the occupation will last, but also what the lasting effect of that drop may be. This is usually the season where an increase in traffic is something we can rely and plan on. We promised we would ask for help if we needed it, so here's us asking.
We’re reaching out to you, our community, our allies, and those who believe in safe spaces for marginalized folks to help us get past this challenge so we can all ensure AYA’s survival and continued impact in DC and the community at large.
What the Funds Will Go Toward:
License Renewals: It's time for us to renew key licenses in order to keep serving our community, all of which require large payments.
Repairs: Our space is in need of repairs in multiple areas to continue offering food and drink that supports our space.
Operating Costs: As the decline of business affects our numbers, the bills we're responsible for (payroll, rent, utilities) remain the same.
We are asking for your support to help us weather this storm and ensure AYA remains a vital part of DC’s queer community. Every donation, big or small, will help us continue to provide the safe, welcoming space that so many depend on. For tax-free donations that will help sponsor programming at AYA for the next year, you can use the ASAP link in our Instagram bio. ASAP is a non-profit committed to education and community. We are lucky enough to be beginning a relationship with this org to help support educational programming, informational events, and interpretation services at AYA.
In a time when our community needs us more than ever, we refuse to give up. Together, we can ensure AYA thrives, not just survives.
Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for standing with the future of our community.
