Help Ashley Provide Care for Aki's Recovery

Donation protected
This summer has been devastating for Ashley and her two Shiba Inu dogs, Rio and Aki. In June, Rio became suddenly ill and was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer, Nasal Carcinoma. Despite emergency care, Rio lost his battle with cancer and sadly passed away on June 17, 2025. Ashley and Aki were left grieving the heartbreaking loss of their beloved boy.

Just weeks later, tragedy struck again. On July 7, 2025, Aki was viciously attacked by another dog. She was rushed into emergency surgery, where two pins were placed to repair her toes and paw. Since then, she has endured a grueling recovery with countless follow-up visits every few days, repeated infections, and another emergency surgery to remove one implant that was causing erosion on her bone. While amputation has been discussed as a potential last resort, Aki’s doctors have consistently shared their confidence and optimism in her recovery. Ashley’s decision to continue treatment reflects her trust in their expert guidance and her deep commitment to giving Aki every chance possible.

Today, Aki requires round-the-clock care. She cannot move freely, must remain crated for her safety, and needs constant cast changes and wound checks. Ashley has been there through every moment, sleeping on the floor beside her, carrying her when she cannot walk, and pouring every ounce of love and strength into helping her heal.

Behind the scenes, Aki has an extraordinary team working for her. Her X-rays and medical records have already been reviewed by her orthopedic specialist in Phoenix, and both her Kansas vets and Arizona specialists are actively collaborating by sharing updates, comparing notes, and building the best plan possible for her recovery. Additional surgery to remove the remaining pin may still be required, but every decision is guided by what will give Aki the highest quality of life. Ashley has made it clear: she is following the expert advice of her veterinary team and putting Aki’s comfort, dignity, and future above all else.

But Ashley herself has also endured unimaginable hardship. After losing everything in 2023, she has been working to rebuild her life from nothing. She now faces her own medical challenges, with new neurological symptoms under medical investigation. On September 23, 2025, Ashley and Aki must relocate from Kansas to Arizona to start over yet again, alone, without a car, and with Aki still in fragile condition.

How You Can Help:
With Aki's ongoing recovery requiring frequent vet visits and potential future surgeries, transportation has become a critical barrier. Without a car, Ashley needs reliable transportation to ensure Aki never misses a crucial appointment. Funds will provide safe, dependable transportation - whether through short-term rideshare services or toward a reliable used vehicle that can safely transport Aki in her current condition.

Every contribution, no matter how small, will help Ashley and Aki take the next step toward healing and stability. If you’re unable to give, please consider sharing their story. Your support helps more than you know.

Thank you for showing kindness, compassion, and love during this incredibly difficult journey. ❤️
