Help Archie to have the hydro pool he needs

4 years ago my little nephew Archie was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive muscle wasting disease.
It is the biggest genetic killer of children worldwide. Life expectancy of those with the condition is mid 20s’. There is currently no cure. It is 100% fatal.

Duchenne is robbing Archie of his future, each day that goes by we are losing him to this disease – his muscles are dying.

Archie will most likely totally lose the ability to walk independently by 11. In his early teens his lungs will weaken and his heart will begin to fail. By late teens paralysis will set in, he will be on a respirator and need 24 hour care.

I feel so helpless when I speak to my sister Beccy, and Archie’s Mum, and knowing only half of the daily struggles that they go through as a family both mentally and physically is the hardest thing to do. Archie telling my sister that his body feels like it is falling apart, lying on the floor unable to move and apologising to her for not being able to get up. Just recently the family have had to explain to Archie’s little brother Freddie that Archie’s muscles are getting weaker and weaker and what that means for his future - seeing the boys faces trying to comprehend such overwhelming news is heart breaking.

I, like Beccy, am also a mother to 3 boys and knowing that I can’t change the future for Archie is devastating, but what I can do is spear head a fundraising effort. To help the now be better so they no longer have to spend their weekends separately as Archie’s brother is taken to football with their father whist Beccy stays at home with Archie and their baby, not being able to push both a wheelchair and a buggy on a dog walk, feeling trapped and isolated. I need to do something to make it better for all of them.

Archie loves to swim, in water he is weightless. Swimming gives him the physical freedom to do so much more than he can out of water. Hydrotherapy has huge benefits to those with Duchenne, not only is it a therapeutic exercise but as the condition takes hold it also offers pain relief and relaxation. In time swimming will become one of the few activities Archie will be able to do and for him to access a therapy pool without having to travel to a hospice is something I want to move heaven and Earth to make happen.

Please help us by donating to Archie’s therapy pool fund, every pound of which raised will go directly into creating a fully accessible therapy pool with changing area and hoists in Archie’s garden. Time is not on our side, so any help you can give to Archie and his family will mean the world to us all and help our determined little fighter Archie to keep smiling.

With hope and huge, huge thanks
