My name is Dyahan and my family and their community in Darliston, Westmoreland, Jamaica have been devastated by Hurricane Melissa. My niece, Anna, and her children survived a nightmare — their home collapsed around them, and they lost everything. For nearly two days, we could not reach them, praying through silence and fear, waiting to know if they were alive. That anxiety was paralyzing — but it was nothing compared to what they endured.

The children saw things no child should ever witness — collapsed homes, lives lost, and neighbors they knew who did not make it. They are traumatized, displaced, and trying to make sense of a world that changed in a single night.

Yet in the midst of this tragedy, Anna — a loving mother, a protector, and a selfless soul — still worries more about others than herself. With a daughter who just entered high school and little ones depending on her, she had been building plans to uplift her community and help vulnerable families. Those dreams have now been swept away, but her heart to serve remains — even as she stands in need herself.
