Help Anglesey to save it's drinking water & historical land

Grwp Cadw Tir Môn is a community group set up by the people of Anglesey. We aim to protect the people and the land on Anglesey.

We are asking for your help to support legal costs to save our communities, drinking water and land.

Donations needed are to support legal costs current and ongoing with the Alaw Mon Solar Farm Development. The goal is to challenge in the Courts the Welsh Government’s decision to grant planning permission for the Alaw Mon Solar Farm; and to overturn the decision for the Alaw Mon Solar Farm Development for public health and safety of drinking water in Anglesey. Alongside the preservation of important land and our heritage.

On the 26th August 2025, PEDW, the Planning Directorate for the Welsh Government granted planning permission for a large scale solar farm on Anglesey, called Alaw Mon Solar Farm.

The 160 MW Alaw Mon Solar Farm is set to be constructed on farmland covering 660 acres just 415m from a vital reservoir called Llyn Alaw. This large reservoir provides drinking water for approximately 30,000 residents on the northern half of Anglesey, and also farms and livestock, and holidaymakers. It is also and SSSI. 35 million litres of water are abstracted from Llyn Alaw every day for drinking water.

What does this mean?

There is a real and foreseeable risk of water and air contamination during the construction and operation of this large scale solar farm and co-located extremely large-scale BESS facility. The health risks are huge and have been disregarded by the Welsh Government.

The land surrounding the lake, accepted to be used in this planning application is prime farmland. Graded between 2-3a Best Most Versatile Land (BMVL).

According to Welsh Government Polices land within 3a grading should not be used for developments. It must be saved for food security. Yet the Welsh Minister has gone against her own policy and has accepted this planning application.

Additionally, Anglesey is recognised as an area of AONB (are of outstanding natural beauty) and an area of historical importance. Classed as a Geopark (GeoMôn) by the UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural organisation). The Island is classed as historical with artefacts and monuments dating back as far as the Druids and the Iron Age.

The Alaw Mon site is situated within 60 meters to The Cors-y-Bol Bronze burial mounds and next to Y Werthyr Iron Age Hillfort. Additionally there are several druid rocks within the site location. Not yet excavated or researched, constructing such a big solar development could destroy artefacts and history forever.

We've listened to the community. Over 600 objections were submitted from the public during our opportunity to voice our concerns.

Following the decision to grant planning we wrote to PEDW and the Welsh Minister asking to overturn their decision. Citing this development risks water contamination to public drinking water, loss of important farmland and destroying historical sites.

The only option left is to procede legally and challenge the decision to grant planning permission to Enso Energy to develop Alaw Mon Solar Farm.

Please donate and help support the community of Anglesey to appeal the decision of Alaw Mon Solar Farm.

Our drinking water, the health of our communities and our heritage depend on it.
