Hello everyone,
My name is Amy "Drea" Martinez and I am currently a Doctoral Candidate at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. I am also currently a Virtual Education Specialist for the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara. I have been conducting research on the policing of gangs in the city of Santa Barbara, California for the past 11 years. As such, I have spent a lot of my time getting to know many boys and young males and their families, hearing about their experiences dealing with juvenile/criminal justice systems.
In my experience of not only conducting this type of research, but building close and intimate bonds with these young people and their families, I have become deeply invested in not being the kind of researcher who simply takes away from the communities I am working with and "researching," but also find ways to give back, especially when their lives are deeply entrenched within such legal systems and they often find themselves in need of financial and legal support .
I am reaching out to you all, friends, family, extended family, and community for financial support in helping me fundraise for one of my youth, Kevin, who is currently 18 , and his family as he is currently facing some serious legal charges in conjunction with a gang enhancement that if found guilty, could send him away to prison for a really long time. For those of you doing this type of work, you are already aware that a gang enhancement added to any charge in California is a minimum of 10 years added to whatever their original sentence may be.
I have been femtoring Kevin for the past two months and in that short amount of time, have first-hand witnessed immense potential in him and a strong desire to "get out of the trenches" and better his life. Prior to Covid-19, Kevin was actually enrolled in Santa Barbara City College and had aspirations of going to UC Berkeley to major in Biology so he could be a marine biologist. His parents are hard working immigrants from Oaxaca and have sustained a steady lifestyle to help provide their sons all the opportunities they dreamed of having for themselves. I have become very close to him and his family and to have to see him and his family have to confront the current reality of him potentially being sent away for a long time and not have the financial means to give his son a fighting chance in court truly is heart breaking. All proceeds will go towards finding Kevin a private attorney.
I know the population of kids I work with are not perfect, but I have always believed that we should never throw them away to the system and forget about them. Any financial support you may offer during these difficult times will be greatly appreciated by me, Kevin, and his family. I thank you all in advance!

Me llama Amy “Drea” Martinez y actualmente, soy una candidata para un doctorado en el colegio: “John Jay College of Criminal Justice” en Nueva York. También soy una especialista de educación virtual para el “Boys & Girls Club de Santa Barbara”. He estado haciendo investigaciones en la manera en que la policía interactúa con las pandillas en la ciudad de Santa Barbara, California desde hace 11 años. En mi experiencia, de no solamente hacer este tipo de investigaciones, pero también de crear enlaces fuertes y honestos con los jóvenes y sus familias. Yo he desarrollado un profundo interés en no ser el tipo de investigadora que recopila información de las comunidades con las que estoy trabajando e “investigando”, pero también me importa encontrar maneras para regresarles algo a ellos, especialmente cuando sus vidas están profundamente arraigadas dentro de los sistemas legales y frecuentemente se encuentren necesitando apoyo legal y financiero.
Yo me estoy acercando a todos ustedes, amigos, familiares, familia extendida y comunidad para obtener apoyo financiero para ayudarme a recaudar fondos para uno de mis jóvenes, Kevin, quien actualmente tiene 18 años. El y su familia están enfrentando algunos serios cargos legales juntos con una ampliación de pandilla que, si lo encuentran culpable, pueden mandarlo a la prisión por mucho tiempo. Para los que están haciendo este tipo de trabajo, ya saben que la ampliación agregado a cualquier cargo de California lleva un mínimo de 10 años aparte de lo que es la sentencia original.
He estado trabajando con Kevin para los últimos dos meses y durante este periodo de tiempo, he visto de cerca, la amplia potencial en él y el deseo fuerte de “salir de las trincheras” y mejorar su vida. Antes de Covid-19, Kevin estaba inscrito en Santa Barbara City College y tenía aspiraciones de asistir a UC Berkeley para enfocarse en biología marina para que fuera un biólogo marino. Su padres son inmigrantes trabajadores de Oaxaca y han sostenido un estilo de vida estable para proveer para sus hijos todas las oportunidades que soñaban tener ellos mismos. Me siento muy cercana a él y su familia y para tener que ver a su familia enfrentar la realidad de que puede ser encarcelado por mucho tiempo y no tener los recursos económicos para dar a su hijo una oportunidad para luchar en la corte, me rompe el corazón. Todos los fondos recaudados van a ir para pagar un abogado privado para Kevin.
Yo sé que los jóvenes con quien yo trabajo no son perfectos, pero siempre he sentido que nunca debemos aventarlos al sistema y olvidarlos.
