My name is Chris Racela and along with my wife Dahlia Racela, we are the God Parents to our little precious Maja Helena Inciong.
Just shy of 18 months old, on January 27, 2022, Maja was diagnosed with Stage 3 Wilms Tumor (kidney cancer) and was admitted to Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital. The same day, after a few hours of being at Lurie's, Maja's body went into shock and nearly lost her life due to her body being heavily toxic and having a large amount of fluid overload. They then learned that both of Maja's kidneys have failed and was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (kidney failure) and put on life support via continuous hemodialysis.
Maja was born on August 31st, 2020 and quickly melted the hearts of her family and those around her. The proud parents Marta and Ron Inciong, and her big brother Julius couldn't be happier - the family is complete! Maja brought big joy to her family but also brought a lot of worries and concerns. Maja was a fussy baby at an early age. Her fussiness and at times, inconsolable tantrums, had her parents concerned. They'd take her to the pediatrician voicing their concerns but always got the same answer that Maja was a baby with Colic and in due time she would be better.
In the months approaching January 2022, Maja's mood and behaviors have changed for the worse. For a few weeks she lacked energy, swelled up, had many inconsolable tantrums and wanted to sleep a lot. When her parents were concerned they took her to the pediatritian and they still had no concern. She wasn't getting better so they took her back 2 days later and finally one of the pediatricians sent her to the children's hospital for an ultrasound. That day, January 27, 2022 was the day of Maja's diagnosis.
Maja has been getting fantastic care at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and currently going through the following treatments to get the help needed:
- Wilms tumor cancer - The tumor had taken over Maja's whole right kidney and was 3 times larger than a normal kidney. A nephrectomy was performed to remove the right kidney. Sadly when it was removed, it was discovered that the tumor had ruptured through the kidney classifying her as Stage 3 cancer. Maja will receive 7 days of abdominal radiation and 25 weeks of chemotherapy treatments.
- Denys-Drash syndrome - A rare genetic mutation that affects the kidneys. Due to this, Maja had her left kidney removed as well.
- End Stage Renal Disease (kidney failure) - Maja will be on life support by receiving hemodialysis at a minimum of 4 days a week for a total of 4 hours. The long-term goal is to move Maja to Peritoneal Dialysis daily at home until she can qualify for a kidney transplant.
Little Maja will qualify for a kidney transplant once she has been 2 years cancer free. The 2 year count down will start after her scans, post her last chemotherapy.
As medical bills, transportation costs to and from the hospital and the dialysis clinic increase, we’d like to support the Inciong Family as much as possible during this time. Every contribution is weighted in gold, no matter the amount. Please join Team Maja, in her lifelong kidney journey. We ask for your positive thoughts and prayers, your encouraging words of life and love.
Each journey is different. Each road takes us to places of uncertainty. This is ours. And while the future is unclear, we are optimistic that each heavy step we take will be closer to Maja's recovery and on to many more Christmases, Birthdays and memories shared with her.
Thank you.
